| Governor
Hja. Jum J. Akbar is the first female governor of the Province
of Basilan – a new face, having been elected during
the May 14, 2007 elections, but not to the job.
For
the last nine years, she was a “steering partner”
of her predecessor and husband, now representing the Lone
District of Basilan in the House of Representatives, Ustadz
Wahab M. Akbar.
Gov.
Akbar assumed her position with a core belief that she can
fulfill the compelling vision and mission of providing free
rubber trees, fertilizers and polybags to the farmers to the
tune of thirty million pesos or more. She believes Basilan
can rise to a new height of prosperity. This is a gift to
nurture and pursue that will pave the way to joining the richest
province in the country.
The
new governor is soft-spoken and cool, but smart and brave.
Her encompassing character amazingly caught many by surprise.
As case in point is how she led and handled the evacuation
and retrieval operations at Al Barka the whole night during
the fateful July 10, 2007 incident.
She
has within her a male competitive capacity and female collaborative
capability balance appropriately. Blending the strength of
both creates dynamic management skills. Taking the same approach,
she tailors her leadership style to suit individual cases
or situations.
