| Governor
Eustaquio P. Bersamin was drafted into the governorship by
a sad twist of fate. The killing of his brother, the late
Cong. Luis “Chito” P. Bersamin Jr. struck a chord
in his Abrenian spirit. He vowed to do everything he can to
lead the province into a new direction but he realized that
he can only do so much as a private citizen; hence, his bid
for the governorship during the May 14, 2007 elections. The
overwhelming support bestowed upon him by his fellow Abrenios
he received with much humility and a fierce determination
not to betray.
Politics is not altogether new to him though. Public service
runs in his blood, so to speak. His father, the late Dr. Luis
F. Bersamin Sr. served as the governor of the province from
1947-1951 and his brother, the late Luis P. Bersamin Jr. spent
most his life running a public office. He himself was a public
servant in the United States before he came home to fulfill
what destiny has planned for him.
Gov. Bersamin is a rare combination of an easy nature and
unwavering commitment to strive for what he believes in. He
never asserts his stature, always treating his people like
“he’s one of them.” Beneath the simple and
jolly façade, however, is a man of extra-ordinary ability
to easily decipher what will contribute in the realization
of his visions and what will be just a waste of the people’s
money, even at the expense of political expediency.
Gov. Bersamin – propelled by fate; armed with a noble
purpose; and serving with a smile.
Born in Manila on March 13, 1947 to the late former Abra Governor
Dr. Luis Bersamin Sr. and the late Dr. Rosario Purugganan
both of Bangued, Abra, Gov. Bersamin has been married for
37 years to Ruby M. Bersamin with three children: Luis Bersamin
III, Tricia del Rosario and Trina Leyco and five grandchildren:
Jacob del Rosario, Krista del Rosario, Jasmine Dakota Bersamin,
Jared Bersamin and Ashley Jordan Leyco.
He finished his elementary and secondary education at the
Divine Word College of Bangued, and graduated with the Bachelor’s
degree in Commerce at the University of the East in Manila.
He reached Bachelor of Laws sophomore level at the Far Eastern
University.
Prior to his entry into politics, Gov. Bersamin was a retired
employee of the Los Angeles Sheriff Department and was the
founder of Annak ti Abra – Southern California.
