“Boboy” Cua is the seventeenth and current governor
of the Province of Catanduanes. Prior to his being a governor,
he was mayor of the Municipality of San Andres, the second
largest town after Virac, the capital. He was serving his
first term (2001 to 2004), when he was drafted to run against
the incumbent governor, lost in his first attempt (2004),
but handily won in his next run (2007).
Born
on October 16, 1962, he is the second child of Fernando and
Asuncion Cua of San Andres, Catanduanes. He is married to
Nancy Ong and has six children.
Gov.
Joseph Chua Cua took up his elementary education at the Hock
Heng School in Virac, Catanduanes and his secondary education
at the Tabaco Pei Ching High School in Tabaco City, Albay.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration,
major in Accounting, from the Philippine School of Business
Administration in 1984.
As
the oldest son of a brood of five, he was tasked to rebuild
their family’s business interests in the wholesale/retail
of basic commodities, copra and abaca. He is credited for
advocating and helping to rationalize the local abaca industry,
which took more than a decade of organizing and coordinating
with the different stakeholders of the industry.
His
dream of a prosperous Catanduanes spurred him to diversify
and become a hugely successful businessman leading his JC
Cua Group of Companies into ventures in abaca trading (GBH),
construction, realty, shipping lines, bus transport, petroleum
products and motorcycle assembly and distribution. Today,
his businesses provide employment to thousands of Catandunganons.
For
his achievements, he has been awarded the Certificate of Recognition
by the Catandungan Foundation for two consecutive years, 1997
and 1998. He was also recognized as one of the Outstanding
Taxpayers in the Bicol Region by the BIR in 2004 as well as
an Outstanding Bicolano Businessman in 2005. He is a member
of the Lion’s Club and a former member and later, president
of the Catanduanes Contractors Association.
