| Governor
Sally Velasquez Ante Lee was born in Lapog, Ilocos Sur, on
July 26, 1942. Since settling down in Sorsogon in 1966, however,
she has lived the life of a Sorsoganon.
A
certified public accountant by profession, she is known for
her community involvement, particularly in evangelization
and social work. As the wife of the former governor of Sorsogon,
Raul Lee, she has been exposed to politics since the 1970s,
when her husband won as mayor of the then Municipality of
Sorsogon. Over the years, her role as first lady of the province
has likewise opened her eyes to the many problems besetting
Sorsogon, and in her own little way did her best to address
such.
Despite
all these, running for public office was never an option,
until the May 14, 2001 elections, when she vied for the position
of city mayor and was eventually proclaimed the winning candidate.
Ms. Lee thus holds the distinction of being the first city
mayor of the newly created city of Sorsogon and as Sorsogon’s
first ever lady mayor since its creation as a political unit
in 1894.
In
the two terms that she served as city mayor, she has generated
interest for Sorsogon City with her involvement in various
associations. She sat as member of the board of the League
of Cities of the Philippines and was the vice-president of
the Philippine Association of Charter Cities and Towns. She
also became a fellow of the Institute for Solidarity in Asia,
and a member of the Philippine National Prayer Breakfast Foundation,
Inc. and the Confederation of Women Networks Foundation, Inc.
Now
that she is at the helm of the province of Sorsogon, when
she got an overwhelming mandate in the May 14, 2007 elections,
Governor Lee is intent on her mission to push Sorsogon towards
economic and social progress and consequently transform it
into a beautiful, clean, peaceful and morally upright province.
Her projects and programs are geared towards development and
productivity with emphasis on reviving a culture of dignity
in the province. She is also a staunch advocate of health
reforms and good governance, knowing full well that such will
translate into lasting social and economic benefits for the
Sorsoganons.
She
is likewise the deputy secretary-general for Luzon of the
League of Provinces of the Philippines.
