Governor Emilio C. Macias II is no stranger to politics. He was born on October 8, 1933 to former Congressman Lamberto L. Macias and Estrella Cabrera Macias.

Although Gov. Macias is a medical practitioner by profession, he begun his political career in 1973, when he was elected as a delegate to the 1972 Constitutional Convention. In 1975, he won a seat in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Oriental, where he served a four-year term. In 1980, he was elected as vice-governor. From 1985 to 1986, he was appointed as Deputy Minister in the Department of Health.

With the restoration of democracy, Gov. Macias sought the gubernatorial seat in 1988 and handily won. This victory was repeated twice, with his reelection in 1992 and 1995.

After serving a full term at the helm of the Capitol, then Gov. Macias sought to represent the 2nd District of Negros Oriental in Congress and won the seat in the 1998 electoral race. He was appointed then as vice-chairman of the Committee on Health. In his second and third term in the House of Representatives, during the 12th and 13th Congress, he chaired the Committee on Local Governments.

During the elections of May 14, 2007, he made another go at the gubernatorial race and easily won the mandate. Likewise, he was appointed as member of Council of Advisers.

Notwithstanding his political commitments, Gov. Macias pursued his medical practice and surgery until 1984. From 1974 to 1975, he was at the helm of the Rural Bank of Siation, Negros Oriental as its president and chairman of the board. He held the same position once more from 1978 to 1980. In 1978, he also founded the Manuel L. Teves Memorial Hospital School of Midwifery, where he sat as a director until 1996.

Gov. Macias was educated at the West City Elementary School in Dumaguete City, then at the Silliman University High School. After completing his Associate in Arts (Pre-Medicine) at the Silliman University, he attended the University of the Philippines where he completed his degree in Doctor of Medicine.

He is married to Melba Pandy Lopez, also a doctor by profession, with whom he has six children.
