| Governor
Carlito S. Marquez was born in Laguinbanua, Numancia, Aklan
on July 21, 1942.
His life story can
be a source of inspiration for our youth. Coming from very
humble beginnings in a sleepy barangay, he went to Manila
after graduating from high school and worked his way to a
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the Mapua
Institute of Technology.
He was among the ten
topnotchers in the 1963 chemical engineering board exams,
and after employment with private companies went on to establish
the Makati-based, multi-million Polychem Industries, Inc.
that deals in detergents, industrial cleaners and processed
chemicals for the manufacture of sugar.
In 2004, Engr. Marquez
was elected governor of the Province of Aklan, and was reelected
with a landslide victory over his two opponents on May 14,
2007.
With the partnership
of Cong. Florencio T. Miraflores, Gov. Marquez continued the
implementation of programs and projects for the province’s
twin development thrusts: agriculture and tourism.
Having known poverty,
the improvement of the quality of life of poor Aklanons is
a priority of Gov. Marquez. “Owa’t ginagaid sa
kapobrehan (no one can be chained to a life of poverty),”
is an allusion to how he managed to rise above the impoverished
conditions of his family.
His marriage to Elizabeth
D. Ricaforte has been blessed with five children: Ma. Luz,
Jesus, Anthony, Lilibeth and John Paulo.
