La Union holds food summit

Governor Manuel C. Ortega will led the Provincial Food Summit, even as the government stresses that in La Union, as in the rest of the provinces of the country, there is no food or rice crisis, but rather a problem of soaring prices that the government is addressing.

The summit was called to help participants better understand and appreciate the current food security issues, government’s initiatives and craft a comprehensive Food Security Blueprint for the province of La Union to ensure food is abundant, accessible and affordable in the province for the coming years.

Provincial Agriculturist Avelino A. Lomboy, the lead organizer of the food summit at the Provincial Capitol in San Fernando City said, that members of the La Union Provincial Board; City and Municipal Mayors; regional; provincial and local agricultural and fishery field units; representatives of irrigators, farmers, fisheries, seed growers associations; lending institutions; consumer groups; business sector; concerned government agencies and other stakeholders actively took part in the summit.

Governor Ortega as the keynote speaker at the gathering unveiled the fresh initiatives of the provincial government to help boost rice and food production in La Union.

The major objective of the summit was to harness multisectoral support to enable the province and the entire country weather the looming global challenges to its food security, amid contracting supplies and rocketing prices of staples like rice, corn and wheat in the world market.

Earlier, a National Food Summit was held in Pampanga where President Arroyo launched a P43.7Billion food security program called FIELDS to enable the country weather the soaring global rice prices and ensure national food security.

The rice supply crunch and escalating food prices is a worldwide phenomena because of global warming and climate change.

The government is doing its best to weather the situation as it continues to initiate reforms and various interventions to ensure a stable food supply at affordable prices for all Filipino. (Renee F. De Guzman/PIA La Union)
