Benguet
governor Nestor Fongwan assured that the agriculture sector
in the province, which had already achieved a high productivity
level of temperate vegetables, will undergo further training
to further intensify production of high-value crops.
Gov. Fongwan said that the World Bank has determined that
the production of high-value crops like strawberries, coffee,
citrus and other indigenous, which have a high demand from
consumers will be helpful in harnessing the agriculture sector
as one of the vehicles for the total eradication of poverty
and hunger in the area by 2015.
Records
showed that due mainly to the completion of various infrastructure
support projects to the vegetable industry implemented by
the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in
Benguet since 2001, the production of temperate vegetables
and root crops has become a multi-million peso industry, now
being pursued by a great majority of local farmers.
The
vital infrastructures include added irrigation systems, farm-to-market
roads, bridges, cold storage facilities and loading areas.
An
estimated daily average of 1,000 tons of fresh vegetables
are sold to vegetable dealers, who obtain their goods from
the La Trinidad trading post.
According to Fongwan, the intensification of the production
of high-value crops, which is not only confined in the La
Trinidad Valley but also in outlying mountainous towns in
the northern part of the province, would necessitate the further
introduction of needed post harvest facilities, technical
training to farmers and more farm-to-market roads. (PNA)
