Two governors bid for a Senate seat

Gov. Chavit Singson shows off his completed Certificate of Candidacy for Senator under the administration’s Team Unity as Gov. Armando Sanchez, Gov. Adolph Edward Plaza, boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and his son, Ronald Singson, raises his hand at the Comelec national office.
Gov. Magsaysay is flanked by members of his family -- led by his wife, Rosellyn Enciso Magsaysay and cousin Sen. Ramon Magsaysay Jr. -- as displays his COC for Senator under the adminstration’s Team Unity at the Comelec.

Off to the Senate race they go.

Two governors have taken a headstart in their respective political campaigns for a seat in the Senate come May 14.

Local governments have placed high hopes on the senatorial bids of Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson and Zambales Gov. Vicente Magsaysay not only because they will be campaigning for the platforms and programs of “Team Unity” but more importantly to champion the aspirations of LGUs for genuine autonomy and rural development.

The governors, through the league, earlier on collectively endorsed the senatorial aspirations of Singson because he “represents a no nonsense form of public service and governance to improve the quality of life of our people in governance.”

The inclusion of Gov. Magsaysay in the Team Unity’s senatorial slate was a welcome development for the governors since they would have not just one, but two champions, in the upper house who truly understand the workings of local governance.

A number of governors trooped to the Comelec on the last day, February 11, of filing of the certificate of candidacies for the senatorial aspirants to make a strong statement of support for the advocacies and platforms of governance of their colleagues.

Governors raise the hands of Team Unity senatorial aspirants Gov. Chavit Singson and Gov. Vincente Magsaysay shortly after the latter filed their respective COCs at the Comelec. At the Comelec to show their support for their colleagues are Batangas Gov. Sanchez, Quirino Gov. Bacani, Agusan del Sur Gov. Plaza, Nueva Vizcaya Gov. Cuaresma, Sorsogon Gov. Lee, Catanduanes Gov. Verceles, Masbate Gov. Kho and Leyte Gov. Petilla.

Among those governors who have already pledged full support to their colleagues running for the Senate and trooped to the Comelec were: Quirino Gov. Pedro Bacani, Nueva Vizcaya Gov. Luisa Cuaresma, Masbate Gov. Antonio Kho, Sorsogon Gov. Raul Lee, Agusan del Sur Gov. Edward Adolph Plaza, Batangas Gov. Armando Sanchez, and Catanduanes Gov. Leandro Verceles Jr.

Both Singson and Magsaysay are seasoned local government officials and had served not only as local chief executives in their respective provinces, but also represented their constituents in the House of Representatives.

Gov. Singson earned for himself the monicker of “Father of the Tobacco Excise Tax Law” when he sponsored the bill which became R.A. 7171 when he served a single term in Congress representing the 1st District of Ilocos Sur. (AJS)
