rallies Ilocos Norte for a show of support to PGMA
In
what was meant as a show of solidarity with the Arroyo administration,
Ilocos Norte Gov. Michael Keon made public his “unequivocal”
support to President Macapagal-Arroyo during a forum that
the provincial government organized.
The forum this morning, dubbed as the “Advancement of
Democracy and Economic Growth,” was meant to lay down
the programs that the Arroyo administration has funded including
the gains that Ilocos Norte had achieved through the President’s
support.
“I
call a spade a spade. I am aligned with the President because
I ran under the Kampi-KBL,” he said.
“I
did this in my belief that it (alliance) would redound to
the benefit of Ilocos Norte,” he added.
It
was the first time in long years that Ilocos Norte has supported
the Arroyo administration.
Keon’s
cousin and former Ilocos Norte Gov. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.
has long been known as an opposition ally. Keon said that
while he was supporting the Arroyo administration he is not
“anybody’s puppet.”
“In
the present turmoil in imperial Manila, I believe that it
is in the best interest of the country that there will be
a smooth transition of power in 2010,” he said.
“The
President must stay the course and ensure political stability,”
the governor added.
He
said Ilocos Norte was a beneficiary of funding support from
Pres. Arroyo in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure and
health.
Ilocos
Norte received the following funding support from the national
government:
nP325 million to improve rural infrastructure, rehabilitation
of public works, small water impounding projects and multi-purpose
centers
nP13.275
million in annual support funds from the Department of Agriculture
to produce rice, corn, high-value crops, livestock and farm
reservoir.
Keon
said Pres. Arroyo has promised a new P149 million investment
for rural infrastructure development and putting up of Botika
sa Lalawigan centers where medicines will be sold in reduced
prices.
The
forum also gathered known Arroyo supporters namely Solsona
Mayor Joseph De Lara, president of the Ilocos Norte Mayors’
League and Sarrat Vice Mayor Corazon Abad, president of the
Ilocos Norte Vice Mayors’ League. (Cristina Arzadon/PIA)
