PGMA graces Cavite gathering for peace and development

No less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo graced the gathering for peace and progress of more than 12,000 Caviteños at the provincial capitol in Trece Martires recently.

Governor Ayong Maliksi led the celebration together with all the local chief executives of the 20 municipalities and three cities of the province.

Gov. Maliksi thanked Pres. Arroyo for gracing the assembly and to personally listen to the sentiments of Caviteños.

In his speech, he also stressed that Caviteños are united in their call to the Filipino people to value the progress that the country is currently enjoying by not allowing attempts of people with personal interests to disrupt the initiatives of the national government to uplift the quality of life most especially of the ordinary people.

President Arroyo thanked the Caviteños for the celebration of what she calls the true spirit of EDSA.

She said that Cavite is one of the most industrialized provinces and has the most number of investors in the country which is why much is at stake amidst the political crisis because investors are worried when the government is not stable.

She also added that the Caviteños played a major role during the revolution and can do much for the nation’s present progress.

For this, she encouraged the Caviteños to make their voices heard in the Senate calling for national peace and progress and unity against corruption.

The President urged the leaders and residents of Cavite to let their voices be heard by the Senate. As the proud home of the hero, General Emilio Aguinaldo, and one of the fastest-developing provinces of the country, Cavite has a big role in the preservation of the country’s freedom and progress.

“Yes, lahat tayo laban sa katiwalian ngunit ang ipinaglaban ni Emilio Aguinaldo ay rule of law at democratic principles. Ipaglaban natin iyon kaya dalhin ninyo ang inyong tinig doon sa Senado, (yes, we are all fighting against corruption, but what Emilio Aguinaldo fought for is the rule of law and democratic principles.)” the President said.

“Ang paglilitis hindi dinadaan sa tsismis. Ang paglilitis dinadaan sa ebidensiya, meron sapat, meron karapat-dapat na korte para doon. Kaya kung pag-uusapan natin ang kalayaan, kung pag-uusapan natin ang demokrasya, pag-usapan natin ang rule of law (the trial should not be based on hearsay. The trial should be based on evidence, it should be substantial and there are the proper courts for this. If we talk about freedom and democracy, let us not forget about the rule of law.) “ the President added.

On the other hand, Gov. Maliksi pointed out that in Cavite, the people are already enjoying the gains of their improving economic conditions.

Proof of which, he said, is the support that the president gave in 2002 when she heeded the call of the Caviteño farmers for the revival of the coffee industry. From the previous low of P28 per kilo, the price of coffee is now between P90 to P100 pesos.

Some of the major projects undertaken by the national government that benefited and will benefit the Caviteños are the Daang Hari Extension which is almost finished, the Manila-Cavite Coastal Road Extension that is expected to be finished by the end of the year, and the proposed LRT Line 1 Extension to Cavite.

Likewise, leaders of different sectors of society including the youth, women, senior citizens, business sector, cooperatives and persons with disabilities (PWDs) were able to express their sentiments regarding the current political crisis in the country during the gathering. (PIO Cavite/OPS)
