multi-sectoral groups ask Senate to wrap-up NBN-ZTE
inquiry
Some
3,000 local officials and non-government organization leaders
have asked the Senate to wrap-up its inquiry on the controversial
$ 329 million National Broadband Network (NBN) deal between
the government and ZTE Corporation of China during the Bataan
multi-sectoral forum held Friday, Feb. 22, at the Bulwagan
ng Bayan in the provincial capitol compound here.
Governor Enrique “Tet” Garcia, Jr., who presided
over the meeting, told mediamen that the participants
voiced out their sentiments on the slow proceedings being
conducted by Senate Blue Ribbon Committee which “does
not appear to achieve its objective to ferret out the
truth and to see that those who are guilty do not go unpunished.”
He
said local officials, civic and religious groups, and youth
organizations considered the on-going Senate inquiry failing
to produce concrete results as varied political ambitions
seem to get in the way of a fair and partial investigation.
The
Central Luzon Regional Development Council (RDC) chair
said the Senate inquiry, which is being conducted amid wide
media publicity including live television coverage, is being
seized by shadowy elements as an opportunity to destabilize
the government and plunge the country into crisis.
According
to Garcia, businessmen in the province have surmised the same
Senate investigation might only succeed in undermining the
economic gains of 7.3 %, the largest growth rate the country
reached in 31 years, and in impeding socio-economic development
programs which are aimed to accelerate growth, alleviate poverty
and improve the quality of life of the people.
He
explained that the wrapping-up of the Senate probe and rendering
its report the soonest time possible to the Office of Ombudsman
and the Department of Justice would allow the conduct of a
fair and impartial investigation with utmost dispatch.
Some
civic and youth leaders added that the Senate is not a prosecutor
nor a judge to determine the guilty party.
They
said the senators, instead of wasting their time for
taking-up issue in aid of grandstanding, must focus on their
more urgent legislative tasks for the sake of the people who
voted for them. (PIO-Bataan)
