Amidst
mounting protests and controversies, local government officials
of the province of Siquijor declared today their all-out support
for Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo whom they said “has
brought so much economic benefits to the province”.
Representative
Orlando B. Fua of the lone district of Siquijor, in his speech
before the officials of the local government units, national
government agencies and students of St. Francis of Assisi
High School and Quezon Memorial Institute of Siquijor (QUEMIS)
during the Forum on Advancement of Democracy for Economic
Growth, renewed his commitment of support to President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo and tagged the latest political bickerings
as another desperate attempts of the opposition who wanted
very much to be in power.
“If
we allow President Arroyo to step down, there will be no end
to these political noises. These will create another round
of barrage, demonstrations, marches and rallies which will
ultimately disturb our country’s peace, progress and
democracy’, Cong. Fua said while citing the economic
gains the province gets under PGMA’s leadership. “Let
us support the President even until 2010. She has been a very
good leader who has brought real progress to our province,”
he appealed.
Sharing
the same call, Governor Orlando A. Fua Jr, who initiated the
forum to drum up support from his colleagues in government
service also appealed to the public, particularly the students
not to take “mere accusations as gospel-truth”
saying that if there is any wrong-doing her administration
has committed, let it be brought to the proper forum in accordance
with the due process of law. “Don’t be easily
swayed with calls for mass actions… know the truth and
exercise your judgment as young people,” Gov. Fua urged.
The
governor said that in the history of public governance, only
the Arroyo administration has done historic improvements to
the province and to the country as he cited the strengthening
of peso, the increase in GDP among other economic gains the
country has achieved so far.
Speaking
as one, the government officials said in a statement of support
their resolve “to remain calm and steadfast in their
commitment to support the President’s endeavor for the
good of the county.”
“While
we are beset with many problems, we strongly believe that
under the President’s leadership, political, social
and economic reforms can be achieved with the tremendous amounts
of hard work and cooperation from our political and social
leaders,” the statement said.
The
Statement of Support was signed by the Congressman, the provincial
governor, the provincial vice-governor, all members of the
Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the five municipal mayors with
their municipal councilors. (Rizalie A. Calibo/PIA)
