Leyte gov asks village leaders to dissuade kin in Manila from
anti-Arroyo rallies

Gov.
Mercado leads local officials of Southern Leyte in their
affirmation of support for Pres. Arroyo amidst calls
for the latter’s resignation. |
Governor
Damian Mercado appealed to barangay officials from Liloan
and San Francisco towns to communicate with their relatives
and immediate families who are now working or residing in
the nation’s capital, to dissuade them from participating
in mass actions meant to overthrow the administration of President
Arroyo.
The
appeal was made during the conduct of “Forum on the
Advancement of Democracy and Economic Growth,” an activity
organized by the League of Provinces of the Philippines and
was carried out simultaneously nationwide.
“If
we count all the people in the Philippines, how much percentage
were those (who want the President to step down). Not even
one percent, or point-something percent, then we will be affected,”
Mercado said.
He
then issued the request to text or call the sons, daughters,
brothers, sisters, and relatives in Manila to refrain from
joining anti-Arroyo rallies, saying the President has done
so much for the Province of Southern Leyte, especially in
infrastructure.
The
League of Provinces, he said, had passed a resolution supporting
the President, citing the increase in the Internal Revenue
Allotment (IRA) under her leadership, and the overall good
performance of the economy in her watch.
The
country has managed to pay off debts using local funds, Gov.
Mercado stressed, quoting the statement of President Arroyo
in one of their meetings.
“President
Arroyo has greatly improved the economy, and the opposition
fears this would continue,” he added.
As
to the ongoing investigation in the Senate, Mercado said this
had not touched on the alleged issue on overprice.
The
Senators were the ones dictating what kind of story they want,
Gov. Mercado further said. (Bong Pedalino/PIA-Southern Leyte)
