Invoking
the true essence of democracy, local officials and multi-sectoral
groups in this province signed on Friday a “Manifesto
of Support” for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo after
hearing opposing views on the current political issues confronting
the country.
The
‘manifesto’ reflected the collective sentiment
of the people of Davao del Norte “reiterating unwavering
and wholehearted support to the President and calling on all
sectors to uphold the rule of law and to resist any means
to disrupt the socio-political economic reforms that continue
to uplift the quality of life of our people.”
More
than a thousand people turned out at the multi-sectoral forum
on current national issues held at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan,
Manklilam, Tagum City on February 22, 2008.
Governor
Rodolfo P. Del Rosario repeated his call for the local officials
and the various sectors to throw their support to the president
amid renewed moves to destabilize the government.
He
cited the economic gains attained under the leadership of
President Arroyo, saying the country is now on the path of
permanent economic growth and stability, as indicated by the
economic growth rate of 7.3 percent, which is the highest
in recent years, among others.
Del
Rosario also sponsored the “manifesto of support”
to the President that was signed by all the governors during
the 2nd General Assembly of the League of Province of the
Philippines in Camarines Sur, recently.
During
the said multi-sectoral forum at the Bulwagan, local officials
and multi-sectoral leaders and representatives echoed the
call for the resolution of the present issue at the proper
forum and not through unconstitutional means.
It
was only Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy who expressed his utmost
frustration against the alleged string of scandals haunting
the Arroyo government.
He
said these charges of corruption fueled the general perception
that public officials are corrupt. After implying that the
president failed to live by example, the mayor called for
a snap presidential election.
Nevertheless,
Governor Del Rosario was able to successfully coax the mayor
to sign the ‘manifesto’, but not without adding
the phrase “for snap election” to his affixed
signature.
Former
Vice Governor Anthony Del Rosario stressed it is time to end
the EDSA revolutions as it has become a constant cycle everytime
issues prop up against presidents.
“Let
us stop the unending cycle of removing presidents just for
political gain,” he implored. (NPB/PGO-ID)
