Govs to PNP, DOJ: Accord due process to Gov. Valera

Gov. Valera expresses his concern over the imminent threat to defame his name and destroy his family.

Beleaguered as he is, Abra Gov. Vicente Valera is still a public officer deserving of courtesy befitting his position.

The governors, through the LPP, formalized their appeal to the DOJ, NBI, PNP and other concerned agencies to respect the constitutional rights of Gov. Valera and accord him the basic courtesy befitting his position.

Gov. Magsaysay proposes a resolution in support of beleaguered Gov. Valera.

Zambales Gov. Vicente Magsaysay, who sponsored a resolution in support of Valera stressed the need for the different investigating bodies looking into the case to not only respect the constitutional rights of the beleaguered governor, but also to accord him due process of law and a speedy and impartial trial.

During the LPP general assembly last January 12, Valera lamented the violation on his constitutional rights when he was apprehended late last month for a traffic violation and alleged illegal possession of firearms.

He likewise complained about the lack of basic human courtesy accorded to him while being held under custodial investigation by the police.

Valera is currently being implicated in a controversial case involving the death of Abra Rep. Luis Bersamin, Jr.

“Gov. Valera and every citizen deserve to be treated with respect and courtesy at all times even while under custodial and criminal investigations,” the league stressed in its resolution.

Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piñol pointed out that while the league has expressed support for Gov. Valera and his plight, they will still allow the rule of law to take its course, but they just want to ensure that their colleague will be accorded his human and constitutional rights. (AJS)
