| Help
for calamity-stricken provinces sought from better-off LGUs
With
billions of pesos worth of crop, properties and infrastructure
facilities severely damaged and thousands of people displaced
in the aftermath of typhoon Frank, the League of Provinces
of the Philippines is calling on the better-off provinces
to help out disaster-stricken LGUs.
League president and Misamis Occidental Gov. Loreto Leo S.
Ocampos issued last July 1, Memorandum Circular No. 2008-013
calling on the more fortunate member-provinces to provide
financial assistance to the provinces that were hardest hit
by Typhoon Frank.
The
latest report released by the National Disaster Coordinating
Council indicates that at least 49 provinces were affected
by typhoon Frank which brought with it strong winds and incessant
rains.
The same report shows that damage to agriculture was estimated
at P7.531 billion, while damage to infrastructure was pegged
at close to P3.205 billion.
According to the NDCC, ten provinces have already been declared
under a state of calamity, these are: Albay, Antique, Iloilo,
Aklan, Capiz, Romblon, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato
and Marinduque.
Gov. Ocampos said that the provision of shelter, the outbreak
of water-borne diseases and lack of food and safe drinking
water due to the inaccessibility of some areas are further
compounding the problem of our colleagues in the affected
areas.
Relative to this, he called on his colleagues from better-off
provinces to either send their financial assistance directly
to the affected province of their choice or course it through
the LPP National Secretariat, which is coordinating the League
efforts in this undertaking. (AJSanchez).
