LPP lauds Mark Lapid appointment as PTA GM

LGUs found another champion in the tourism industry with the appointment of a former governor to the top post of the Philippine Tourism Authority.

The League of Provinces of the Philippines recently lauded Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for appointing former Pampanga Gov. Mark Lapid as General Manager of the PTA – the implementing arm of the Department of Tourism.

In a resolution approved during the 4th General Assembly, the governors lauded the appointment of Lapid as it “provides a fresh opportunity for the national and the local governments to work closely together in the promotion of a sustainable and thriving tourism industry.”

The provincial chief executives likewise viewed the appointment as “a recognition of the leadership and the vision of local government leaders to work for national economy and development.

Like with the national government, through the DOT, the different provincial governments and governors have put tourism among the priority programs for development.

Masbate Gov. Elisa Olga Kho, who sponsored the resolution, pointed out that local government looks upon tourism to provide employment and livelihood opportunities in the countryside, at the same time provide the venue to showcase the richness of Filipino tradition and culture to the rest of the world.

The governors pointed out that if there is someone who could work effectively with LGUs in developing and implementing a sustainable and economically viable tourism, it would be someone who has served and understood the dynamics of the local governments and their constituents.
