Sonny Angara during the Commemoration of the 109th Anniversary of the Siege of Baler and Observance of the 6th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day in Baler,Aurora (NIB Photo-Rico Borja)

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said today that strengthening relations between the Philippines and the world, especially natural friends like Spain, is the central pillar of her administration’s strategy to improve the country’s economic growth and political stability.

Addressing the 109th anniversary celebration of the Baler Siege and the 6th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, the President underscored the importance of bilateral relations with other countries to further promote its values and cultural ties.

“Strengthening relations between the Philippines and the world, especially Spain, is a central pillar of our strategy for economic growth and political stability,” the President said.

The President visited Aurora to lead the nation in the yearly giving of tribute to the gallantry and bravery of the Filipino troops who won after a year of fighting with the remaining Spanish soldiers in Baler Church.

On hand to welcome her were Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo, lone district Rep. Juan Edgardo J. Angara, and Baler Mayor Arthur J. Angara, and among others.

The celebration, she said, carries out the objectives of the decree issued by then President Emilio Aguinaldo for giving uncommon valor to some 50 Spanish soldiers who was besieged and convinced to surrender after almost a year of fighting with Filipino Katipuneros inside the Baler Church.

“On this day, we thank Spain for our rich cultural legacy, and for all her other contributions that enabled our country to draw closer to our goals of peace and progress,” the President said.

Luis Arias-Romero, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Spain to the Philippines, accompanied the President in the wreath-laying ceremonies at the historic Baler Church.

Joining the President in her visit here were Sens. Edgardo Angara and Juan Miguel Zubiri, and National Historical Institute Chairman Ambeth Ocampo.
