LPP condemns assassination try vs. Batangas gov

PNP Director General Arturo Lomibao inspects what remained the vehicle of Gov. Armando Sanchez after a bomb, planted under the driver’s seat, set off, resulting in major burns for the governor and the death of his driver and security aide.

THE League of Provinces of the Philippines is condemning in no uncertain terms the assassination attempt against Batangas Gov. Armando C. Sanchez.

Gov. Arman Sanchez

Sanchez narrowly cheated death, while his driver and a security escort died, when his vehicle exploded shortly after leaving the Batangas Capitol Complex last June 1.

Speaking on behalf of the league, Gov. Erico B. Aumentado said that the assassination attempt against Sanchez was very unfortunate, and that all the concerned agencies of the government should work together in order to unmask the perpetrators and file the appropriate charges.

“This is an uncalled for act of aggression against our local government leaders, which we strongly condemn,” Aumentado said.

He added that the law enforcers should look at all angles of the case, as well as the motives behind the attempt to kill the governor.

It may be recalled that at about 7:00 in the evening, a bomb, believed to be planted under the driver’s seat of Sanchez’ Hummer H2 – a military-type sports vehicle, exploded just shortly after the governor and his aides left the parking slot at the capitol building.

While Sanchez suffered major burns, his driver, Luisito Icario and his security aide, PO2 Erick Landicho were charred to death inside the burning vehicle.

According to media reports, the PNP Crime Laboratory, which is examining the evidence gathered at the site of the bombing, has found traces of TNT.

Chief Superintendent Ernesto Belen, head of the PNP Crime Laboratory, said “the materials recovered were very limited, but initially, there were indications that high explosives (were used). There were also traces of TNT. But the examination is ongoing to determine specific (materials used in the bomb).”

According to reports from the PNP, only few groups are capable of carrying out bombings using high explosives, these are the communist New People’s Army, the military, the police, and groups with links to either of the above. (ANGELICA J. SANCHEZ)
