Anti-cha-cha advocacy,
a way to protect personal interests

Gov. Pedro Romualdo
Camiguin

THOSE sectors who have been vocally expressing their opposition to initiatives for charter change are those who have personal interests to protect.

Such was the view expressed by Camiguin Gov. Pedro Romualdo, who proposed for the governors and the LPP to openly support the moves to amend the Constitution.

Romualdo opined that, “those against cha-cha are those with interests to protect.”

He explained that the Senators are openly against cha-cha, particularly the proposal to shift from a bi-cameral presidential to a unicameral parliamentary form of government, because this practically a recall of the Senate.

The big-time media are also against amending the Constitution because this could provide an opportunity for the opening up of new outlets.

Church leaders, on the other hand, are resisting the efforts to amend the national charter because there may be provisions in the future to impose taxes on the church, Romualdo said.

He explained that since the governors have been taking an active part in the nationwide multi-level education campaign on constitutional reforms, the league might as well be among the petitioners in the people’s initiative for Charter amendments.

The governor moved to authorize Gov. Erico B. Aumentado, in his capacity as national president of the LPP, to sign the people’s initiative petition for charter change which will be filed before the Comelec, which is expected to be filed very soon. (ANGELICA J. SANCHEZ)
