LPP to conduct orientation for newly-elected governors

Former LPP President and DILG Secretary Joey Lina shares his expertise in governance to newly-elected officials during the 2004 LGA Workshop on Jumpstarting Local Governance in Cebu.

The League of Provinces will conduct a one-day Peer-to-Peer Orientation for Newly-Elected Governors on August 2007. The orientation is, however, open to all governors. In addition to selected experienced governors taking part as speakers, second and third-term governors will also be invited to enrich the discussions with their personal experiences.

The orientation was designed to achieve the following learning objectives for the governors: 1) familiarization with the challenges that a governor will face especially during the first 100 days; 2) learning from the experiences of their peers in becoming a successful governor; 3) appreciating the dynamics of provincial development through alliance building; and 4) strategies to deal with new realities and maximize development opportunities in the province.

Former LPP Chairman and now Camarines Sur Representative Luis Villafuerte imparts his innovative experiences on local goverment management to newly-elected local officials during the 2004 LGA Workshop on Jumpstarting Local Governance in Cebu.

The orientation is meant to provide a foundation upon which newly elected governors can build their skills to provide effective leadership in the province’s local governance framework. Part of a broader orientation program for all local elected officials, this particular orientation organized by the League will focus on leadership and management.

While other components of the over-all orientation program which will be undertaken by DILG will provide theoretical information on the provisions of the law as well as management tools on local governance such as LGPMS, the LPP orientation is meant to be experiential in nature.

The orientation will be delivered in a peer-to-peer approach where experienced governors will be the speakers to share their experiences in different aspects of the governor’s role. It is meant to highlight successful experiences which can inspire newly-elected governors in the strategic thinking process they have initiated during and immediately after the election. It is meant to demonstrate innovative experiences and to show what is to be expected and what is possible.

An over-arching theme to the orientation is that “good governance translates into good politics.” (Boy Limbago)
