| League
partners with Philippine College of Surgeons for medical missions
program
The
League of Provinces of the Philippines has firmed up its support
for the medical missions program through encouraging the use
of local specialists in conducting medical missions, specialists
in the provinces and other areas of collaboration.
In a presentation made before the LPP national executive board
meeting last June 6, the Philippine College of Surgeons, represented
by Dra. Esperanza Lahoz and its president Dr. Armando C. Crisostomo,
presented to the league its outreach surgical missions program.
Dr. Lahoz said that the programs of the PCS include surgical
missions, specialist to the province, adopt a community and
other projects.
She explained that the various chapters of the PCS conduct
surgical missions, especially in the underserved areas of
the country, in partnership with the LGUs.
Under the partnership agreement, the national committee on
community services of the PCS acts as the over-all coordinator,
assists the local chapters in the recruitment of specialists,
medicines/supplies. The PCS local chapters, on the other hand,
is the coordinator in the area of mission, provides manpower
as well as pre- and post-operative care of patients. For its
part, the sponsoring LGU is expected to provide for the medicines,
the meals of the medical team, transportation and lodging,
provide for the security of the team, as well as recruit patients
for the surgical mission.
League president and Misamis Occidental Gov. Loreto Leo Ocampos
suggested for the LPP to come up with a general agreement
with the PCS on its community services program, with the details
to be discussed individually with the concerned LGUs.
Meanwhile, the National Executive Board approved a resolution
adopting the Go Green: Go for the Real Thing project of the
Boy Scouts of the Philippines and allow the use of vacant
lots of the provincial government as the Go Green and tree
planting sites.
Likewise, Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes proposed the inclusion of
the provisions that local governments provide counterpart
funds for the BSP be included in the resolution. Davao del
Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario also pointed out the need for
the LGUs to commit the services of their respective provincial
environment and natural resources officer to the program.
The concept of the Go Green project of the BSP is to develop
a series of complimentary merit badges that will develop a
scout into a pro-active environmentalist, nature lover and
entrepreneur.
BSP representative Jose Eduardo Delgado said the program is
“envisioned as a holistic endeavor designed to implant
into a scout’s mind the awareness, skills and desire
to help, improve the following issues: climate change, the
life cycle of a tree, how to care for a tree, learning how
to derive a source of income from trees, developing an entrepreneurial
spirit in the scout, learning basic business analysis tools,
and, having fun while learning a life long skill.” (AJSanchez)
