Govs
cross party lines to support 2 colleagues’ senatorial
bid
The
fraternity of governors have vowed to cross party lines if
only to ensure the victory of two of its members, Ilocos Sur
Gov. Chavit Singson and Zambales Gov. Vicente Magsaysay, who
are running for a Senate seat under the administrations’
Team Unity.
At
a special general assembly of the league held last March 7,
Gov. Singson appealed for the support of his colleagues relative
to his senatorial bid.
“I am really banking on your help. Talagang wala akong
inaasahang iba kundi kayo,” he told the governors present.
Gov. Singson stressed that with the support of the governors
he can achieve victory in the coming May 14 elections, as
he adopted the battle cry of “Probinsiya Mo, Sagot Ko.”

Joel Reyes |
Speaking
in behalf of the other provincial chief executives, Palawan
Gov. Joel Reyes reiterated their earlier commitment to support
Govs. Singson and Magsaysay in their senatorial bids, notwithstanding
personal party affiliations.
We have earlier agreed to support our fellow governors, and
we are crossing party lines. This means that our linkages
will not be limited to our respective party affiliations,
rather, this is our commitment as a league, Gov. Reyes added.
On top of his four-point platform is the development of the
local governments, beginning with the provinces.
He said that the key to achieve sustainable growth and development
is by developing the country at the provincial level.

Gov.
Luis "Chavit" Singson |
“Creating
job and livelihood opportunities in the provinces, establishing
a conducive climate for business and entrepreneurial activities,
providing essential agricultural input and infrastructure,
encouraging the establishment of quality educational institutions
and health care facilities – in short, making our provinces
desirable places to live in will stop people from migrating
to the country’s urban centers or overseas in search
of a better life. Add up all the provinces that have become
dynamic industrial and business centers and we have a booming
national economy, a developed, highly respected country no
longer classified among the poor, underdeveloped Third World
countries,” Gov. Singson stated.
Aside from developing the country by developing the provinces,
the campaign platform of Gov. Singson includes the crafting
of legislation which will provide poor families a comprehensive
package of benefits to enable deserving students to finish
college education.
He also envisions to institute reforms in the judicial system,
including the strengthening the Public Attorney’s Office,
providing incentives such as honoraria and/or tax exemptions
to good lawyers who offer pro-bono legal services to indigents
in order to level the playing field.
Also in Gov. Singson’s campaign platform is drafting
legislations to provide for the special needs of special children
like the exceptionally gifted, differently-abled and intellectually
challenged, among others. (AJS)
