League affirms support
for PGMA governance agenda,

vows to work for Team Unity victory

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo raises the hands of the members of Team Unity, the administration’s senatorial slate in the May midterm elections during a proclamation rally held at the jampacked Cebu Coliseum on February 17. Team Unity is composed of Edgardo Angara, Joker Arroyo, Mike Defensor, Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, Vic Magsaysay, Cesar Montano, Tessie Aquino Oreta, Prospero Pichay, Ralph Recto, Luis Singson, Tito Sotto and Miguel Zubiri. Steadfast in its support for the governance agenda of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the LPP has vowed to work for the overwhelming victory of Team Unity.

In its special general assembly held last March 7, the league adopted a resolution affirming its support for the pro-poor, pro-growth and pro-local autonomy agenda of the president under the 8 by ’08 Agenda.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s 8 by ’08 Agenda focuses on job creation; pro-poor education; health care and housing; more investments; hunger mitigation; lowering the cost of living; a strong peso; tough tourism drive; and a green Philippines.

In return, the league sought the commitment of the Team Unity coalition to support the Kilos Asenso program of the LPP, to act fast to devolve more power to local governments.

They also asked the administration senatorial ticket to work for increased farm productivity by building more infrastructures in rural areas, strengthen the mega-regions as economic growth centers, and to provide more incentives to, as well as, strengthen the linkage among micro-businesses.

The league pointed out that since Congress will play a vital role in ensuring the success of the 8 by ’08 Agenda, the country needs a Senate that would pursue a legislative agenda fully supportive of the president’s goals.

They also pointed out the need for a Senate that shall serve as a catalyst of, instead of an obstacle to, reforms that need to be implemented in order to spur development in the countryside. (AJS)
