Governors’ Support for PGMA. Forty-two of the country’s governors, led by LPP national president Loreto Leo S. Ocampos and national chairman Luis Raymund F. Villafuerte Jr., in a photo opportunity with Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the vigil and show of support for the chief executive held at the Premiere Guest House last February 29.

While anti-Arroyo groups took to the streets of Makati to participate in a mass action asking for the President’s resignation, euphemized as an “inter-faith rally” last February 29, some 42 governors trooped to the Malacañan Palace to manifest their support to Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The governors, led by LPP national president Gov. Loreto Leo S. Ocampos and national chairman Gov. LRay F. Villafuerte Jr., took an afternoon off from their respective provincial appointments to take part in a vigil to express their support for the President.

The gathering at the Premiere Guest House of the Palace brought together not only the governors, but also members of the House of Representatives, led by presidential sons – Pampanga Rep. Mikee Arroyo and Camarines Sur Rep. Dato Arroyo – allied with the administration, as well as city and municipal mayors.

The LPP had earlier adopted a manifesto calling on the political opposition to allow Pres. Arroyo to complete the last two years of her administration and wait until 2010 to present their respective agenda and programs to the people through the elections.

It was a gathering where there were no speeches made, no program to follow, and no order of business to take care of.

However, there was just a single agenda: to stand firm behind Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her presidency, the Constitution and the rule of law.

Even as the President went about her regular appointments for the day, the congressmen and local officials chose to hold fort at the Palace while monitoring the events unfolding during the “inter-faith rally” in Makati, where anti-administration stalwarts called for the President to resign.

While awaiting the arrival of the President from her sorties, the governors participated in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist sponsored by the First Family.

When Pres. Arroyo arrived at the Premiere Guest House in an apparently good mood, she graciously obliged to photo opportunities with the governors, congressmen and other local officials there, after which she went around from table to table to for a tête-à-tête with her guests.

Earlier in the day, the governors organized sponsored masses for peace and unity in their respective provinces as a counterpoint to the “inter-faith rally” held by the anti-administration groups. (AJSanchez)
