PULLING THE TRIGGER
By Gov. Douglas RA. Cagas, LLB, MBE, MNSA

French-Algerian, author and philosopher Albert Camus justifies the exercise of freedom in such a way that, “Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better.” And he could have told the Philippines of the present times how freedom should be used for the general welfare. Or are the present day “puppeteers of destabilization plots” showing the whole world that Camus is no better than them in terms of self-interests or self-aggrandizement and burying freedom at their own expense? They could have pulled the strings vigorously with their own musicale, turning the people into awed hostages to their incessant motives and peripheral yet dangerous moves of power grab.

The Lozada Expose of the alleged anomalous but rescinded ZTE-NBN Deal has plunged the nation again into another political turmoil and threatening to emasculate and prejudice not only PGMA’s hold to power in Malacaòang Palace, but also the rising momentum of the country’s economy. We are witnessing democracy at its best and yet the irony of this democracy lies in this political conundrum that has unmasked the best and worst exercise of freedom in our goal to be better than the past years. The truth is historically we already unseated and installed presidents the way we change our dresses during mornings and before bedtime. Democracy in some ways is routinary because we have fallen time and time again to the same bait, not learning the hard lessons taught by history.

As the soul-advisers-of-Jun Lozada-turned-cowboys scrimmage to make him look good as the smoking gun with plenty of live bullets for a Russian roulette, their fancy goal is to make the country crawl at their own behest, to fulfill their self-interests while the ordinary people defying the rain and scorching heat of the sun are praying for the long-sought change. The People Power of Edsa Uno has made its mark in the world that we can achieve independence without blood bath. The lessons we learned from a bloodless revolution is not on how it was successfully done, but rather it should be on how to make the exercise of freedom do better for our country and for ourselves. Salus populi suprema est lex.
