Gov.
Marañon bids farewell at 73
Negros
Occidental Gov. Joseph G. Marañon joined the Creator
at 6:40 p.m. on March 13, 2007 after he succumbed to liver
cirrhosis. His body was interred last March 17 in his hometown
in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
He was 73, and would have celebrated his 74th birthday on
March 19.
He
is survived by his wife, Aida Lopez and three children.
Gov.
Marañon was on his third and final term as governor
of Negros Occidental. Elected in 2001 by an overwhelming vote
of the Negrenses, his election campaign slogan was “Beyond
the Basics.” During his term, he focused on his Seven-Point
Priority Agenda for Development. These are Food Security and
Agricultural Productivity, Improved Health, Education and
Social Services, Infrastructure Development, Environmental
Protection/Rehabilitation of Five Major Watershed Areas, Investment
Promotion & Development of Small and Medium as well as
Export-Oriented Enterprises, and Tourism Promotion & Development
of Mambukal Mountain Resort and other major tourist attractions.
Prior
to his entry into the provincial political arena, Gov. Marañon
served as municipal and city mayor of Sagay. He was the catalyst
who steered the direction and transformation of Sagay into
a thriving and healthy city, now glowing with potentials.
While
in the private sector, Gov. Marañon successfully established
and managed his own businesses – from rural banking
to agriculture, and was a director of the Rural Bankers Association
of the Philippines, director and vice-president of the Sagay-Escalante
Planters Association. He was also director of the National
Federation of Sugar Planters, president of the Northern Negros
Planters Association Inc., M & L Legal Corporation and
Phoenix Philippines Industrial Corporation.
