Lingayen,
Pangasinan — Despite the re-emergence of the illegal
numbers game or jueteng in the province, Governor Victor Agbayani
stressed that the province is strongly against it.
Authorities
admitted that indeed the illegal numbers game is slowly returning
even as the governor sought a study of the report submitted
by PNP provincial Director Alan Purisima.
“I
have long stressed that we will support the crusade of Archbishop
Oscar Cruz against illegal gambling,”Agbayani said.
The
governor also stood firm in his decision not to allow even
the government proposed-small town lottery (STL) to operate
in his province.
“As
far as the province is concerned, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan
rejected the STL the last time it tried to enter,” Agbayani
quipped. “And to my knowledge, it has not attempted
to re-enter at least at the provincial level”.
Agbayani
suggested that the government implement a consistent law in
the country that will not be biased on what kind of gambling
to legalize and what not to, to avoid the public impression
that gambling is alright for the rich but not for the poor,
a double standard of sorts, according to him. (Venus May H.
