League welcomes new set of govs,
calls for renewed commitment to national development

The votes have been cast, the constituents have spoken.

The League of Provinces of the Philippines, through its national president, re-electionist Bohol Gov. Erico B. Aumentado, formally congratulated the gubernatorial bets who made it in the May 14 mid-term elections.

At the same time, he urged the new set of governors to continue supporting the various programs and advocacies of the league aimed at pushing the provinces forward and promoting development in the countryside.

In his letter to his colleagues, he acknowledged the vital roles played and support extended by the governors in the economic turn-around experienced by the country over the last few months.

“Let us continue to work together as a league in order to sustain the gains we have made on achieving genuine fiscal decentralization and more local autonomy as espoused by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo whose administration has given due recognition to the vital roles of the local government units in the great task of nation building,” he stressed.

Aumentado pointed out that it was only during Pres. Arroyo’s administration that the national government gave due recognition and extended its full support to the vital roles of LGUs in the country’s development.

He said that the Arroyo administration has recognized the league as an effective partner of the national government in pushing forward her programs for development embodied in the Medium Term Philippine Development Program and the country’s commitments to the Millennium Development Goals.

The league president reiterated that Pres. Arroyo has been implementing, in partnership with the LGUs, a new development planning strategy anchored on the development of Mega Regions, to spur faster economic growth in the countryside.

Likewise the administration has opened up sources of funds for community projects by authorizing, for the first time ever, the automatic and immediate release to LGUs of our respective shares in the internal revenue allotments effective 2007 in compliance with the constitutional command on the automatic appropriation and release of IRA to LGUs.

He likewise cited the LGUs for having stood by the president in the critical juncture of her presidency and thwarted the efforts of the various destabilizing forces against the government.(AJS)
