President
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo gave today an unsolicited advise to
some 3,000 residents here to use their electricity wisely
and for the progress of their island.
The President made the call when she visited this remote island
mid- afternoon today to formally switch on the button that
signaled the energization of five barangays in this ‘emerging
paradise in the Pacific.”
“It is only now that there is electricity,” an
obviously happy President said in the Filipino dialect, as
she took note of the use of fluorescent lamps which consumes
lesser electricity.
The President noted that Lahuy island and the whole of Caramoan
group of islands have great potential for ecology-tourism
as they boast of virgin white sands and limestone.
“Your islands here in Camaroan are beautiful,”
the President said.
The President said with electricity, the island is well on
its way to progress if its tourism potentials are fully developed.
“Tourism is very important. It creates jobs in all levels….from
professionals to skilled worker…from the most talented
to least skilled,” the President said.
“We want the people to benefit from the growing economy,”the
President said as she noted that when she became President,
she vowed to energize every barangay in the remotest area
in the country before 2010.
The P87-million Missionary Electrification Project, a project
fully realized after four years, is now 95 percent completed.
For today, 20 barangays were lighted up—eight barangays
in Kinalasag island and seven in north Lagunoy.
Camarines Sur Gov. L’Ray Villafuete, who accompanied
the President said she is the second high official who visited
the island——the first was her father, the former
President Diosdado Macapagal, when he was still a vice-president.
‘’We are lucky we will be part of history. President
Gloria is the first President to visit us,” Villafuerte
said.
He added that before the island was energized, there was not
much to read or hear about the island but ‘’we
see and feel government service.’’
The President “gave us hope to start a new beginning.
We are now emerging to be heard after the President’s
visit here,’’ he said.
The residents were all glad and thankful to the President
for ‘’spending time’’ with them. (OPS)
