Governor
Icot Petilla’s dream for Leyte schools, colleges and
universities to become homes and training centers for highly
in demand courses, which meet the needs of ICT related industries
is likely turning now to a reality.
Latest
development to have arrived shortly after the first ever
Industry Summit held three weeks ago initiated and hosted
by governor Petilla is this almost final tie up and partnership
of microelectronics firm ZILOG based in Manila with Eastern
Visayas State University EVSU and the Philippine Science
High School DOST 8, which will, according to reports be
sealed on the 26th of this month through a Memorandum Of
Agreement MOA.
Expressing
his appreciation to the efforts of governor Icot, Mr. Gleen
Ocana of DOST said during an interview over Hingyap Han
Leyteno program of the province the other day that Mr. Jesus
Felipe of ZILOG will be donating 20 units of computers to
EVSU and another 20 units to Philippine Science High School
of DOST 8, Candahug Palo.
“This
would not have been possible had it not been for the initiative
of governor Petilla and the province of Leyte,” he
said.
Meanwhile
on his part, Governor Petilla expressed his sense of fulfillment
through which his little efforts are producing interesting
results, and albeit at this point he said his office and
the province will but withdraw from the limelight it being
just a support actor in this undertaking. “The stakeholders
are now the focus of interest and they are the ones that
will have to ensure and sustain their agreements,”
he said. “An importante ginpatikangan naton ini”.
Icot said, another summit is tentatively scheduled on January
next year and hopefully with the presence of CHED.
In
his bid to lower if not eliminate the wide gap of mis-match
between the profile of college and university graduates
and the need of major industries in the country, governor
Icot has initiated the holding of industry forum with the
primary objective of bringing together policy makers in
schools, colleges and universities in the province to a
productive forum with the human resource officers and executives
of various major industries and companies in the country.
The
3-day industry forum last month brought initial achievement
after a microelectronics firm ZILOG expressed intentions
to tie up with interested schools and colleges in the region,
which initially EVSU and DOST likewise responded their respective
interest of the offer.
With
this development, EVSU and the Philippine Science High School,
Eastern Visayas will be the first ever-learning centers
for michotronics and robotics technology in the region.
This early, EVSU is about to undertake steps to redesign
their curriculum next school year in order to address the
need of the industry, particularly the microelectronics
industry.
The
orientation regarding the scheme in the implementation of
the project and the turnover of the computer units is slated
on the 26th of October in Manila. (ROY MORALETA)
