A
bill proposed by Cebu 3rd District Rep. Pablo John Garcia,
mandating component cities to remit a share in the real
property tax collections to the provinces gained support
from the League of Provinces of the Philippines.
The members of the National Executive Board, in their recent
meeting unanimously agreed to support House Bill No. 1697
sponsored by Garcia.
League
president and Misamis Occidental Gov. Loreto Leao S. Ocampos,
who pushed for the approval of the resolution, said Rep.
Garcia’s proposed bill “seeks to correct this
onerous and unfair situation by granting provinces a share
in the proceeds of real property taxes imposed by component
cities.”
He
explained that while the provincial governments continue
to maintain provincial infrastructure, such as roads and
bridges, within the component cities and extend mandatory
assistance to covered barangays, these cities do not share
the burden with the former.
On
the other hand, the smaller and less financially-capable
municipalities exclusively share the burden of providing
services with the concerned provinces. (AJSanchez)
