League,
provinces chip in
for
Guimaras rehabilitation from oil spill
 |
Gov.
Erico Aumentado with Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon
announced that the LPP has allocated P500,000 as financial
assistance to Guimaras. |
THERE
is still much to be done, and the assistance keeps coming
in for Guimaras, whose environment and people suffered so
much loss because of the oil spill that hit it last month.
The assistance came not only from the league, but also other
provinces that willingly shelled out their funds in order
to help out Guimaras in its rehabilitation efforts.
During the special meeting among the Visayas governors in
Bacolod City last August 30, league president Gov. Erico B.
Aumentado informed Gov. JC Rahmann Nava that the LPP has allocated
P500,000 as financial assistance to the province of Guimaras.

Gov.
Tommy Joson proposes a systematized scheme for extending
assistance to calamity stricken provinces. |
The
amount already includes the P100,000 which Albay Gov. Fernando
Gonzalez donated to the province.
In
a special general assembly of the league held last August
24, Nueva Ecija Gov. Tomas N. Joson III floated the idea of
the league implementing a systematized scheme for extending
assistance to calamity-affected provinces.
He suggested that 1st, 2nd and 3rd class provinces are encouraged
to give at least P50,000, P30,000 and P20,000, respectively,
to affected provinces.

Gov.
Niel Tupas, Sr. |
During
the meeting in Bacolod City, host governor Joseph Maranon
of Negros Occidental likewise turned-over a check worth P200,000
to Gov. Nava, and so did Iloilo Gov. Niel Tupas Sr.
 |
Gov.
Sally Perez |
Gov.
Gwendolyn Garcia likewise handed over a check worth P5 million
to Nava as Cebu’s contribution to its neighboring province’s
efforts to bring itself up on its feet again.
 |
Gov.
Rosette Lerias |
Gov.
Salvacion Perez likewise announced that the other provinces
in the Western Visayas region, namely Aklan, Capiz and Antique,
will also be giving P200,000 each.
She added that the mayors of these three provinces have likewise
committed to extend assistance to the five municipalities
of Guimaras.
Moreover,
Perez also announced in behalf of Gov. Rosette Lerias that
the Province of Southern Leyte will be sending in both in
cash and in kind.
 |
Gov.
Fernando Gonzalez |
 |
Gov.
Vicente Magsaysay |
Earlier,
Gov. Gonzalez decided to donate the P100,000 financial assistance
extended by the league to his province due to the pre-eruption
activities of the Mayon Volcano to Guimaras citing that the
latter’s calamity condition is more pressing than that
of Albay, and that his province’s financial status is
not on a critical level yet.
Gov.
Magsaysay has pledged to give Guimaras P100,000 as assistance
from the Province of Zambales.
Guimaras, which has been blessed with one of the world’s
richest marine biodiversity, suffered a major environmental
blow when the oil tanker, M/T Solar I, carrying some two million
of bunker oil, sank off the Guimaras Strait last August 11
after encountering rough seas. (AJS)
