THE
League of Provinces of the Philippines has allocated P3.6
million of its funds as financial assistance for governors
on official travel out of the country, following a resolution
sponsored by Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz.
The resolution came about due to the restrictions of the DILG
on the use of local funds for official travels abroad of governors
and other local officials, notwithstanding the fact that these
trips are intended to enhance development interventions in
the countryside and expand the networks of the LCEs for private
investments, business prospects, tourism, twinning and sisterhood
opportunities with other foreign local governments.
To ensure its equitable distribution, each governor will be
entitled to avail a maximum of $1,000 every year.
Catanduanes Gov. Leandro Verceles, however, proposed that
the assistance fund can be availed only by governors whose
provinces have paid their dues to the league.
The governors may avail of the financial assistance when their
official travel out of the country is in representation of
the LPP, the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines
or their respective provinces. (AJS)
