Barbers’ School Building Project; a breakthrough to costly built classrooms

The newly built earth bag classrooms in Barangay Day-asan, Surigao del Norte is said to be a breakthrough to conventional expensive school buildings.

The project was made possible by the help of Governor Robert Ace S. Barbers to ABAKADA-(Akayin ang Bukluran ng mga Kabataan sa Daigdig), the LGU’s non-government partner for the project.

According to ABAKADA Executive Director Criselle Cudiamat, when they lobbied their concept of having earthbag classrooms, it received a lukewarm reception from most members of the House of Representatives. He said they felt blessed when Gov. Barbers, who was congressman then, heeded their proposal.

“We at ABAKADA would like to share the success of this project with and thank Gov. Ace Barbers who shared our vision and has been our partner from the beginning.

“We truly thank you Gov. Barbers for giving us a chance to prove that this technology works and it can be done,” said Cudiamat during the Turnover Ceremony.

Gov. Barbers said he is taking the challenge of the times in coming up with the best ways and approaches in implementing the province’s programs and projects.

“Mayor Casurra and I gladly accepted this brilliant idea from ABAKADA because we know that this new approach to modern technology in buildings, will serve as a breakthrough to costly built classrooms or even houses. It is economical because it is made from earth soil and yet very resistant to earthquakes and typhoons, and most of all, it is environmentally friendly. “

The manner this project was implemented was very edifying, because the community of Day-asan was responsible for the local labor, reviving the Filipino spirit of bayanihan. It is my fervent hope that the people in Day-asan will take care and value this project, so that the future generation will enjoy the quality education they deserve,” said Gov. Barbers.

Also present during the turnover were Hon. Akira Sugiyama from the Embassy of Japan, Illac Diaz, president of My Shelter Foundation – the technical partner of ABAKADA, Chuck Janolino – executive vice-president of La Farge Company, Mayor Alfonso Casurra, and Brgy. Captain Henry A. Celeste. .(Ivonnie B. Dumadag-PPDO).
