LPP condemns Gov. Castillejos ambush try

The country’s governors, through the League of Provinces of the Philippines, strongly condemn the brazen attempt on the life of Batanes Gov. Telesforo Castillejos during a pre-dawn ambush on his way to the airport in Pasay City last September 3.

League president and Misamis Occidental Governor Loreto Leo S. Ocampos said the governors, who crossed party lines to condemn the incident, are “enraged by this arrogant display of brutality and violence in the heart of our country’s capital.”

“This malevolent attack on the life of Gov. Castillejos is a shameless attempt to silence a decent and hardworking public servant whose dedication to service and efficient governance endeared him deeply to his people.”

The governors made an urgent call on the PNP to act with dispatch to bring the culprits before the clutches of the law so that justice will be accorded to Gov. Castillejos and the people of Batanes.

In a resolution sponsored by Ilocos Sur Gov. Deogracias Victor Savellano, the governors expressed their strong abhorrence over “the dirty politics of violence which mired the image of a serene and tranquil Batanes province and home to peace-loving people.”

“I condemn this barbaric attempt against a decent and hardworking public servant. Political violence has no place in a democracy. We should resolve our difference through dialogs and not violence,” said LPP Vice-President for Luzon and Oriental Mindoro Gov. Arnan C. Panaligan.

Gov. Sally Perez of Antique, who is also Vice-President for the Visayas of LPP said, “I have known Gov. Castillejos in the past few years as a man with great distinction and integrity. He is one of the finest men I know in government and in politics today. That someone or some groups with still unknown, but certainly malevolent, intent would plot and carry out an attempt to kill him is beyond human reason.”

Camarines Sur Gov. Luis Raymund F. Villafuerte, who is also chairman of the LPP, said “whether the attack was politically motivated or not, the governors will not tolerate the careless disregard for the life and safety of one of our finest colleagues in the LPP. I condemn this brazen act of criminality.”
