Govs throw in support for beleaguered colleague

Beleaguered Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan found allies in the League of Provinces of the Philippines, after the governors signed a manifesto of support for his administration and leadership.

At the special general assembly of the LPP held last September 12 in Marco Polo Plaza Hotel in Cebu City, league president and Misamis Occidental Gov. Loreto Leo S. Ocampos sponsored the manifesto of support for Gov. Tan.

The statement collectively adopted by the league said, “we believe that it is within the discretion of the incumbent to plan out and implement programs to the benefit of his constituents. It is within the incumbent’s power and prerogative whether to adapt and continue the programs of the past administration or pursue his own development agenda.”

Early this month, a recall petition was filed against Tan before the Commission on Elections for allegedly canceling a livelihood program that has been deemed key to the province’s peace and order campaign.

The governors pointed out that while they are not intervening into the local politics of Sulu, they believe that the province needs political and economic stability so it can attain development.

They likewise opined that that the recall move against Tan and the other officials of the province are counterproductive that will only result to more chaos in the local political arena and ultimately affect the general well being of the country.

“We believe that political bickerings will be best resolved during the regular general elections in 2010 – a good 20 months from now. This way, the political, economic, financial and even human resources of the locality will not be exhausted,” the manifesto stated. (AJS)
